List two specific key relationships between Sam Taylor Wood’s photography and film work?

Sam Taylor Wood’s Photography involves a lot of human emotion and human form. Her films also show a lot of emotion, especially in her filmed call ‘Nowhere boy’

How does the use of multi-screen installation in her work reflect narrative?

The use of multi-screen installation for her works allows and reflects a narrative, she doesn’t put the narrative up which allows the audience to have an open mind about her work.

What other photographers use film as an integral part of their work. List two with examples?

Larry Clark is an example who uses film as part of his work as well as photography. He produced the book called ‘Tulsa’ and also created the film called ‘Kids’

Another photographer Tim Walker also produces films which asses to his creative work, he has produced two moving images called ‘Forgetful Green and ‘The lost Explorer.

Research three other Video artists and explain their working philosophy

Andy Warhol along with the Art that he produced he also was into creating short films. Warhol showed his homosexuality through his work, he never held back on the pieces of work that he produced as he never cared about what people thought of him. An interesting film that he created was called “Andy Warhol eating a hamburger” My thoughts on this video are maybe that he is trying show maybe how he is sectioned out just because of his sexuality, having to sit on his own eating.

Another Video artist who i think is quite inspirational is Bill Viola. His work is very different from others and he focuses very closely on slow motion. He likes to capture human activity in slow very slow motion, The video called ‘The Reflecting Pool’ is a very strange film, he doesn’t use slow motion in this video but he videos the pool as normal and a character stands by the pool and then jumps in but captures this as a stand while the water is still moving.

Ono put forward the idea that art shouldn’t just be something that people recognise as something that hangs on a wall. The film that she produced of her sitting on a stage with a black dress on and invited people from the audience to cut small small pieces out of her dress. Her idea and what she made art into was something that you could interact with and create physically not just pencil and paper.

Show an example of a specific gallery space or a specific location where a video artist or film maker has created work specifically for the space and been influenced by it.

An example of a film that a video artist has created work specially for a film could be jaws three, it was set in sea world Florida, a perfect place that can be used to film animated sharks in water.

Genius of photography Moving Image Part 1…

How did Bjork and Chris collaborate on the All is full of love video?

Bjork wrote the song and Chris directed the video.

What techniques were used on the portishead video to create the unusual slow motion effects ?

The strange and unusual slow motion in the music video Portishead was filmed by putting the people into a tank of water then digitally inserted them into a alleyway of a street.

What other music video directors have gone on to direct feature films? Name two and the feature films they have made.

Spike Jonze took his love for music videos and became a film director, one of his best movies : Being John Malkovich

Another video director called Marc Webb has been in the music business for a long time, creating videos for many bigs names such as, Good Charlotte and Green day. Then went on to directing films, one of his well known films being 500 Days Of Summer.

Which famous sci - fi film did Chris Cunningham’s work on before he became a director?

Before leaving to pursue his career as a director, Cunningham worked on a few different films one being Alien 3 which was published in 1992

What makes his work different or original compared to other similar directors?

Chris Cunningham’s work is very original but also rather strange, he edits a lot of his work himself, using a lot of technical effects mostly to do with human form.

Principle 2…Novice to Expert

The difference between a novice and an expert? A novice is a person who has minimal knowledge and understanding in their practice. A novice is basically still needs help from the experts around them to help make the right judgments, close supervision and instruction which will help them towards their goals. Novices cannot see the bigger picture, struggle to solve problems and dealing with complexity becomes difficult. They will find it difficult to excel in their practice without that supervision. However, at the other end of the scale are the experts. Experts have authoritative knowledge and understanding in their practice, understanding across the area of practice. Their standard of work is excellent and with their understanding allows them to reach that goal with ease. The one thing that defines whether a person is an expert is that they are able to take responsibility for the decisions made and trying to exceed existing standards, pushing the boundaries to achieve highly! Rating myself pone the Novice to Expert scale i would say i would be a beginner, i feel like over the past 3 years i have moved on from the being a novice, being able to complete tasks without the amount of supervision which used to be needed, i feel i am able to make certain steps using my own judgement!

Principle 1…The experts

There are many experts which i have strong opinions about but if i had to make the choice on one of my favourite photographers which has given me great inspiration over the certain project is the famous Steve McCurry, He is well known for his inspiring colour work and managing to photograph the most astonishing photographs of both human struggle and joy. A quote from McCurry which inspires me is where he said “he realised, people will forget your camera and the soul will drift up into view” I think he is an inspiring man who takes some amazing photographs, his portrait photography especially inspired me for this project. I think his photography differs from any other photographers of today, the affect that he manages to give his photographs is amazing, the colour that he produces is truly inspiring.

Principle 1…Image and Text

Photographs can have so many different meanings before any text has been applied to them. The mind will instantly but a scenario together of what it thinks the image is about. For example the image of this open lane with just a large random puddle could mean anything, just a nice landscape image? However when the photograph is placed in a surrounding such as a police station then the whole story of the photograph changes, as it could have been a scene of a death. Everything changes as sound as the photograph surrounding changes or text has been applied. This principle applies well with my project, taking street photographs of different people and each having individual stories, of an interesting part of their life. An example from my photographs is the man with the leather hat, he could just another other person until he tells me a story and realised he had a wooden leg!

Principle 1…The three act structure

The three act structure is where by films follow a certain pattern, still taking into consideration the basic structure having a beginning, middle and an end. The three act structure starts with establishing what the film is about, understanding the characters. The film then moves onto having a crisis, how something within the film which gets in the way of what is happening. Then ending with the crisis being resolved in someway, normally with something romantic, or love which happens due to the crisis being resolved. Most films these days are created and based around the three act structure, film creators feel that the structure works, however film creators only use this structure as a foundation, films will just be made around the structure changing the context and try to apply it so that it actually fits the story line of the film.

A recent film that i can think which follows the three act structure is ‘Blood Diamond’  The film starts of with Leonardo DiCaprio dealing in diamonds, which he then gets found out and gets sent to jail, the crisis comes into play when he realises a fisherman knows where the diamond is, however the fisherman is in search for his kidnapped son. The son is eventually found after killings and they retrieve the diamond along with the women Leonardo met. The film ends in a romantic phone call to the women whilst he had been shot, telling the women to help the fisherman sell the diamond he past in kindness to help his family. Simply following the Establish: Crisis: Resolve!

Principle 1…Interpretation

Visual practitioners are always redesigning pieces of work that have been created over different time periods. Illustrators take there own interpretation on the piece of work and put their own unique style and meaning to it. The different periods effect the outcome of the work, because different illustrators may interpret the work in another way. a good example of work to look at is the well known children’s book of ‘Alice in wonderland’ there has been so many different interpretations of this book, you can see throughout the time periods how the characters change from being dark, looking evil moving into a later date where illustrators have made the characters very colourful and have twisted maybe the original meaning behind the story. this shows just how over a period of time and with different influences and visual practitioners having unique styles to change the way the book is portrayed. Looking at one of the very first illustrations of Alice in Wonderland that were created in the 1800’s, could only have you used pencil but as the time periods moved on illustrates could started using technology and the use of computers brought in the colourful side of Alice in Wonderland.

Billboard Example

This billboard has been used to great effect in the way it has been designed, the board is advertising a tooth paste that apparently strengthens the teeth, the designers have created a very visual billboard, the way that the man in the advert is tearing away the board from its metal frame, only using his teeth, getting across the point that the toothpaste works very well at strengthening the teeth.

Principle 2… Delivery

This principle is all about how visual practitioners enhance there communication through different platforms of work. it it essential that the appropriate platforms and formats are selected that fits in with the context of the work they are creating. There are many different platforms that allow you to visually communicate ideas to the audience, there are six different categories which the platforms sit under. Starting with Editorial platforms, this is all to do with publishing magazines and newspapers, this platform is a perfect place for practitioners to start their careers, the audience size allows the work to be seen on a mass scale. Another platform known is publishing, this covers all types of media such as books and posters, this is a perfect platform to use when the need of specialising in a certain topic, for example a visual practitioner that was interested in children’s books wouldn’t go to find work at an editorial magazine but specialise to publishing a book that targeted their audience specifically. However reducing the size of the audience scale provides a challenge to be able to visually communicate well to the market so that the work is recognised and becomes successful. Another platform that can become challenging is advertising, the reason for this is that you can vary is the size which you want to advertise, from a tiny brochure to billboards. the difficulty starts when the practitioners have to change the way in which they design the piece of advertisement so that it fits and suits the platform. Billboards could provide difficult just because of the shier scale in which the art has to be mounted on. It also has to have something very catchy about it so that the audience that ill be passing by notice it and process which is being shown.
